What do desktop support engineers do?



A desktop technician manages and repairs existing computers, laptops, security measures and servers on his company's network. They install, configure and troubleshoot computers and all other applications and printers for optimal performance. This is a very practical career where individuals often have to respond to urgent requests and need to help individuals face to face. Some trips may also be requested.

This career can be found in almost all areas that have their own computer network and the desktop engineer usually has a manager to report to. You can work in teams with other engineers and support other subordinate IT technicians or corporate customers. The working environment can vary according to the type of company. For example, retail companies can be opened before and after normal business hours, while banking companies can only be open during normal business hours.

This type of career usually requires at least a high school diploma. As a rule, a degree in computer science or software engineering is preferred. Training can often be replaced by experience, additional certifications and special training for different brands and desktop platforms. A solid background in computer science and knowledge of all Windows platforms are required. Those looking for this professional qualification must have excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as technical problem-solving skills. Some light programming experiences, Microsoft Office, network security and antivirus experience or training can also be seen as an advantage.

Desktop technical support activities

Answer calls or tickets to support end users with applications, hardware, software and networks.
Create end user documentation and knowledge base articles.
Solve hardware and software problems personally and remotely, solve and document solutions.
Monitor backups and maintenance logs.
