Duties and responsibilities of the junior engineer

A junior engineer works under the direct supervision of a more experienced engineer in a wide variety of fields ranging from construction to infrastructure to manufacturing. Junior engineers support their supervisors during the design and development phase, perform calculations and prepare project plans, monitor and report on progress and problems that arise during the project life cycle. Although the responsibilities of the junior engineer are much more limited than those of a full-fledged engineer, this role offers an excellent opportunity for recent graduates or new professionals to gain valuable experience and hone their skills.

Duties and responsibilities of the junior engineer

Because they work in so many different fields, the specific tasks of a junior engineer can vary. However, based on the vacancies we reviewed, junior engineers share several basic responsibilities:

Develop plans and calculations

Young engineers develop plans and perform calculations for a variety of elements within an engineering project. Under the direct supervision of a senior engineer, they can draw structural plans and schematics and then send them to their supervisor for correction and approval. They can also receive assignments from supervising engineers on specific project components and perform necessary calculations and estimates.

Manage your project workflow

Many young engineers also provide direct support and daily supervision of the elements of the project. They can visit sites to take measurements, answer the contractor's questions on behalf of the supervising engineer, and act as a liaison between engineers and construction personnel. Many young engineers also develop project schedules and deadlines under the supervision of more experienced engineers.

Provide technical support

Many of the junior engineer jobs involve providing direct or indirect support to engineers or teams of engineers. This task can be relatively broad, including tasks such as collecting data for permit applications, submitting documentation to officials, and ensuring that change orders are recorded and sent to personnel throughout the construction process. As these tasks are usually assigned by the supervising engineer, the daily tasks vary greatly and depend on the needs of the project.

Prepare project reports

While working on a project, the junior engineer prepares progress reports and submits them to engineers and other staff. They can compare project schedules and budgets with expectations and report possible delays or problems that arise during construction. A junior engineer may also need to help fill out project specifications and submit reports to funding sources or government bodies in the case of an infrastructure or public works project.

Coordinate team members

Many young engineers work in teams that include contractors, technicians, and other young engineers, so team coordination and collaboration is another important task. Junior engineers work closely with these team members on specific project elements, making sure all team members understand their specific tasks and expectations, and report to supervising engineers to keep them informed of issues within the team.
