A computer engineer uses software programming, hardware engineering, and electrical skills and training to design and develop new software programs and hardware components. Additionally, IT engineers make sure that these new tools are ready for public or corporate use. In this job, they are also responsible for testing programs and hardware before and during use to ensure that everything works efficiently and without errors. When problems arise, IT engineers identify the problem and develop a solution to fix it. They can also market software or equipment to potential buyers.
What education do I need?
Due to the competitive nature of computer engineering and the ever-changing technologies associated with careers, a bachelor's degree in computer engineering, a bachelor's degree in computer science, or a degree in a related field is required for employment. If you are sure that you want a career as a computer engineer, we recommend that you take math and science courses as soon as possible. If possible, start taking these courses in high school so they give you the foundation you need to earn your degree in the field.
Your undergraduate courses will continue your science and math studies with classes in computer programming, hardware design, and electrical engineering. Even after completing your degree, you will likely continue to research computer engineering, IT technology and practices to maintain a competitive advantage. Professional certification opportunities are offered through a variety of positions. For example, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers offers certifications for entry-level and middle-level professionals .
What is the job outlook?
