IT Infrastructure Engineer Job Description

IT infrastructure engineers create and manage the hardware and software components of your employer's IT network. When servers, routers, PCs, and other equipment need to be set up or repaired, an IT infrastructure engineer is often the contact person for the job. With the growing ubiquity of information technology and the internet in all aspects of the economy, these professionals can be found in any business, as well as in government and non-profit entities. They typically work regularly in an office environment; however, support-focused roles can require more travel and guard time, as well as rotating shifts.

Duties and responsibilities of the IT infrastructure engineer

IT infrastructure engineers have different responsibilities depending on the specific role they play in an organization, but some elements of their work remain similar:

Establish the network infrastructure

Whether you're building a complete IT network or setting up a PC and access permissions for a new employee, IT infrastructure engineers provide the technology foundation for much of your organization's daily operations. This process involves hardware and software configuration and often basic interaction and training with end users who may not be familiar with the finer aspects of IT.

Provide IT support

Because IT systems are so crucial to the day-to-day operations of most organizations, IT infrastructure engineers must solve problems quickly. Problems are usually "escalated" by a worker or non-specialist for resolution. Depending on the scope of his or her duties, the engineer may be responsible for communicating with interested parties, identifying the problem, designing a solution, and implementing that solution.

Maintain network components

Minimizing IT disruptions requires constant maintenance of the network infrastructure. IT infrastructure engineers manage updates, upgrades and other maintenance activities in the hardware and software areas. Furthermore, they are looking for ways to make the network more efficient, profitable and secure.
